The Institute of Licensing Launches a Nationwide Survey on Taxi Reform
The Institute of Licensing is conducting a far-reaching survey to find out what drivers, operators, customers and regulators think of taxi laws as they stand.
ST AUSTELL, UK, June 20, 2010 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- A nationwide survey aimed at the users, operators and regulators of taxi services is being conducted by The Institute of Licensing (IOL). The survey will find out what drivers, operators, customers and regulators think of taxi laws as they stand and whether or not there could be some benefit in introducing new laws or in streamlining existing laws.
Jim Button, chair of the IOL's Taxi Working Party, said: "Legislation governing taxis dates back to 1847 and was clearly written with carts and horses in mind. The law has been amended and re-amended over the years leaving a system that is complicated and open to abuse.
"The application of outdated laws on a local level has led to vast inconsistencies in interpretation. Drivers are concerned about unlicensed minicabs, operators are frustrated by overzealous regulation and customers are justifiably confused about their rights as a taxi service user.
"We want people to give us feedback on current legislation and tell us what changes they think should be made."
The survey, which is open online until 30 June 2010, can be accessed via the IOL website at www.instituteoflicensing.org. Once responses have been collated, the aim is to look for a general consensus on how the existing law could benefit from modernisation.
