Loretta de Vries Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Nonprofit Management
Loretta de Vries is the founder, president and CEO of The Dialysis Food Foundation of South Florida
SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FL, October 29, 2010 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- Loretta de Vries, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Dialysis Food Foundation of South Florida, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in nonprofit management.
"This is a winnable war against human suffering in our community." So says Loretta de Vries, head of The Dialysis Food Foundation of South Florida, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food and services to low-income disabled dialysis patients. She founded the organization in 1996 in honor of her late husband Johan, a former diplomat who had to undergo dialysis treatments because of diabetes. While accompanying Johan to the Gambro Renal Center, she became aware of dialysis patients who had little or no resources for a steady food supply. Determined that the neediest in her community should not have to go without basic necessities, Ms. de Vries started raising funds to collect and distribute non-perishable, nutritional and balanced food for indigent dialysis patients in South Florida. She and her associates now provide food to 250 patients in the area.
With a growing wait list of more than 600 people, Ms. de Vries has had to make sacrifices to continue the much-needed service that she provides. She has cut her monthly salary by half and has also actively sought county grants. Her efforts had not gone unnoticed, however; the recipient of numerous awards, she has been honored with Positive Living Award in 2009 by the Alliance for Aging, with the Sara Hopkins Community Service Award in 2008 by The American Red Cross, with the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative Local Hero Award in 2008 by The Bank of America, and with the Making a Difference Community Service Award in 2007 by the Alliance For Human Services and the Dialysis Patient Citizens "DPC" Hero Award from Washington DC in 2009.
