Women and Children Escaping Abuse Find Support from Vancouver CEO
Vancouver CEO reaches out for support to help women and children at the YWCA's Munroe House.
December 09, 2010 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- Vancouver CEO reaches out for support to help women and children at the YWCA's Munroe House.
As female CEO of the Jouta Performance Group, being a strong woman is something Cori Maedel can relate to. However, everything she's ever experienced in business is eclipsed by the strength, resilience and pure survival instincts of the women at the YWCA's Munroe House.
Established in 1979, Munroe House was the first second-stage transition house in Canada. This ten-unit building offers a secure and supportive home for women and their children escaping abuse.
Maedel explained, "I can't even begin to imagine what these families must have gone through. These women are so, so brave. They've left behind everything to start a new life free from abuse and they need our support. I've built my career around guiding women on how to be strong and on how to be their very best; this incredible cause speaks to me on so many levels. People who know me will understand that it's just not possible for me not to be involved."
Maedel and her team at Jouta are holding a morning of craft activities for the families at Munroe House on December 21st and hope to take with them as many donations for the families as possible.
"I'm reaching out to anyone and everyone who wants to offer their support. What these brave women really need are donations of household items so that when they transition from Munroe House they have the very best possible start."
The YWCA are looking in particular for women's gifts, especially self-care items and things for the home: products for the bath/kitchen/home, winter scarves, candles, teapots, aromatherapy diffusers and oil, pyjamas, slippers, or even boxes of chocolates, coffee or tea.
"We'd love to turn up at Munroe House with a car full of donations (or better still, a van if someone has one we can borrow!). Even the smallest item such as a jar of tea or coffee would be such an amazing help."
All donations are kindly requested to be dropped off at (or mailed to) the Jouta Performance Group offices in Yaletown (Suite #301 - 1040 Hamilton Street, Vancouver, V6B 2R9) on week days between the hours of 9am and 4pm, by December 20th, 2010.
Sadly, far too many women need help in leaving an abusive relationship. One in two Canadian women over the age of 16yrs has been the victim of physical or sexual violence and, every year, more than 100,000 women and children seek safety in Canadian shelters. Thousands of women are seriously injured by their partners and, on average, 73 die each year.
