Claire Gliddon Honored for Steadfast Dedication to Charitable Causes
Claire Gliddon recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for professional excellence
FAIR OAKS, CA, May 7, 2010 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- Claire Gliddon, Coordinator of the Sacramento Chapter of Project Linus, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in nonprofit leadership.
On Christmas Eve, 1995, an article titled "Joy to the World" appeared in Parade Magazine. It was written by Pulitzer Prize winning photo-journalist, Eddie Adams. Part of the article featured a petite, downy haired child. She had been going through intensive chemotherapy and stated that her security blanket helped her get through the treatments. After reading the article, Karen Loucks decided to provide homemade security blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center, and Project Linus was born.
Today, Project Linus strives to provide love, security and comfort to children "in need" (those who are ill, homeless, in foster care, or just going through a difficult time) through the gift of handmade blankets and afghans. Thousands of volunteers belonging to chapters spread throughout the U.S. volunteer to support the organization's mission. Claire started the Sacramento Chapter in 1997, wanting to honor the women in her family who inspired her: her grandmother, who taught her to crochet; her mother, who was an avid volunteer for many causes; and her sister, for her love of children. At the Sacramento Chapter, over 800 individuals work to provide customized blankets for children in need through over 100 local organizations. At the helm of such operations is Claire Gliddon, Chapter Coordinator. As such, she is responsible for overseeing all chapter operations, making and labeling blankets, liaising with local children's organizations and managing volunteers, also referred to as "blanketeers." Her 14-year tenure has seen many impressive accomplishments—since its inception, the Sacramento Chapter has donated approximately 43,141 blankets, 7,854 of which were made in 2009 alone.
In addition to her work as Coordinator, Ms. Gliddon also draws upon her expertise in crocheting to create unique covers for walking canes. Selling each for $5, she uses profits to buy yarns for Project Linus. Her inspiration for her "cane sweaters", she notes, came from an idea she had to "jazz up" her father's life when he started using a cane. Her innovative ideas and dedication to the charity has distinguished Ms. Gliddon from among her peers, and her story, "A Day in the Life of a Project Linus Coordinator," was featured in the organization's online newsletter and distributed to thousands of coordinators and volunteers nationwide. She credits her success at Project Linus to her positive outlook and supportive network of family members. Moving forward, she will seek to continue providing children in need with blankets. She encourages others to get involved with Project Linus, and seek affiliation with any one of its 378 chapters. Volunteers work from their homes and have no quotas, no deadlines, no meetings and no pressure.
