Ginger and Randolph Robinson Discuss their Work at FACE the Challenge, Inc. with Cambridge Who's Who

FACE the Challenge, Inc. (FTC) has performed 1,052 pro-bono facial reconstructive surgeries to date.

CENTENNIAL, CO, May 13, 2010 /Nonprofit PR News/ --Since 1993, FACE the Challenge, Inc. (FTC) and its associates have performed approximately 1,082 pro-bono facial reconstructive surgeries on the world's neediest individuals. It has delivered critical medical supplies and pioneered healthcare education in developing nations. At the helm of such operations stand Ginger, BSN, RN, and Randolph Robinson, MD, DDS—they are the organization's founders, as well as its president and lead surgeon, respectively. In an exclusive, recorded interview, the non-profit sector's power couple shared with Cambridge Who's Who their experiences, collected like souvenirs from Costa Rica, Bolivia, China, Kenya and Vietnam. Each of their stories speaks to the success of FTC and underscores the unwavering commitment of Dr. and Mrs. Robinson to indigent populations:

"...Phuong was 23 years old when we met her last year as we traveled through Vietnam. She had been waiting for 12 years for someone to remove her tumor. ...In the recovery room, her mother was so timid, just trembling because she could see her daughter from afar but was so afraid even to go and look at her. When she did, [she] just burst into tears, just saying the same thing [over and over]. 'Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had waited for 12 years for someone to help my daughter and you did.'" - Ginger Robinson, BSN, RN, President of FACE the Challenge, Inc.

"We were in China. [Our] last patient...was a Chinese albino with a cleft. She was 13 years old. We repaired her lip and palate [in] a four-hour surgery. The next day...we were making our final rounds and the girl was there with her grandmother. The grandmother was emotional, thanking us, and through the translator, we found out that if we had not done her surgery, the father had instructed the grandmother not to bring the girl back. They had traveled two days to see us. So they were going to leave the girl, somewhere, if we didn't do her surgery... We saved that girl's life simply by doing the cleft repair." - Randolph C. Robinson, MD, DDS, Cranio-maxillofacial surgeon for FACE the Challenge, Inc.

"One of the people who moved me the most is a young man from Kenya, [for whom] we arranged to have his surgery done in the Denver area. He had a four-pound jaw tumor that was pressing on his airway and was truly life threatening. Randy was able to provide a 19 ˝ hour surgery to remove the tumor and perform facial reconstruction along with a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses... Just to see the hope revived in him as he departed to go back to Kenya to share with his family his new face, that was really rewarding." - Ginger Robinson

Ginger noted, "We see extreme cases as we are contacted by people in remote areas [and as] we travel to regional centers," which attract unusual burn and tumor victims as well as patients with severe facial traumas and deformities. As president, Mrs. Robinson draws upon her expertise in critical care nursing to manage administrative and organizational coordination. She prepares medical teams and packs supplies for international trips, makes travel arrangements, corresponds with different embassies and foreign health ministry officials, and travels when her schedule allows. Her husband, a cranio-maxillofacial surgeon, serves as a team leader. In addition to performing surgery, he teaches seminars and educates local healthcare professionals using case studies. Through these efforts, he hopes that he will enable destitute regions to become self-sufficient with medical professionals trained to handle such cases.

Such work is not for the weary—the couple admits that their mission necessitates stamina, flexibility, a broad knowledge base and a heart for caring. Noted Ginger, "Being a nurse requires...a willingness to see somebody at their most vulnerable time." Randolph added, "The challenging part about being a surgeon is dealing with the patient's expectations for the [surgery's] outcome." Despite the many obstacles that may arise during the course of their careers, together, Dr. and Mrs. Robinson have created a legacy of courage, triumph and breathtaking compassion.

Dr. Robinson lends nearly three decades' medical expertise to FACE the Challenge and Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery. He recently received The 2009 Norm Early Award from the Denver Center for Crime Victims in recognition of his "personal and professional commitment to helping victims of crime," after having performed free facial reconstruction for a woman suffering from shotgun wounds. Ginger Robinson is a registered nurse with a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Missouri's Sinclair School of Nursing. She served as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN) for six years and taught basic life support (BLS) during her hospital career. In April of 2009, she was honored with the Humanitarian Award by her alma mater for her efforts through FTC.

FACE the Challenge, Inc. is a volunteer-run organization with no salaried employees. Administrative and medical expenses are funded by financial gifts and donations. To learn more about FTC and about how you can contribute to the cause, please visit http://www.facethechallenge.org.
