The Preemptive Love Coalition And Doctors At Fallujah General Hospital Report 12 Birth Defects In Just 3 Days

Pediatricians at the main hospital in Fallujah, Iraq are reporting a steep increase in genetic mutations. This week alone, a single doctor reports diagnosing several congenital heart defects, neural tube disorders and one particularly rare anomaly.

HEWITT, TX, October 16, 2011 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- The small clinic is packed with people. Fathers are pacing. Children lay limply in their mother's lap. These days, the waiting area for Fallujah General Hospital's pediatric wing sees a lot of traffic.

Dr. Samira Alaani is a pediatrician assigned to care for these children, which means she is charged with identifying and caring for children born with birth defects - no small task in a city like Fallujah. After experiencing some of the Iraq War's most intense fighting, chemical fallout from depleted uranium (DU) weaponry is alleged to have left much of the city blanketed in 'toxic dust.'

Today, many local doctors and citizens point back to DU as being the key factor behind the city's increased incidence of birth defects. "Twelve cases of different kinds of anomalies have been recorded within the last three days." says Dr. Alaani. This does not include diagnostics from the other five pediatricians at the hospital.

Most of the malformations found in Fallujah are heart defects, but unusual cases have also been reported. One extremely rare case of abnormally conjoined twins was reported in which a baby was born with the arms, legs, torso and some of the internal organs of its conjoined twin protruding from its stomach. According to local health authorities, severe mutations like this were unheard of before the war.

But Dr. Alaani and her colleagues have hope for their city's future. "We are not against you or against America," she assured. "I hope you don't feel like we are attacking you by telling you about depleted uranium. We are simply trying to find a way forward for Fallujah."

Founded in 2007, the Preemptive Love Coalition's mission is to create a medical infrastructure throughout Iraq capable of caring for the sick children of Fallujah. To date, PLC has saved the lives of over 160 Iraqi children and provided local doctors with over 30,000 hours of hands-on training.
