North Carolina Woman and her adopted rescue rabbit have their own Non-Profit Organization to enhance the lives of US shelter rabbits
Greta Parker of Greensboro, North Carolina, and her adopted rescue rabbit, Flopsy, have a mission to make life better for shelter bunnies - and it is working.
LEDGEWOOD, NJ, December 09, 2011 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- In September 2010, Gretta Parker adopted a rabbit from Guildford County Animal Shelter. Their story started with a Facebook page she started for the bunny named Flopsy Parker. Through his page, and his increasing popularity she learned of the plight of rabbits in shelters and rescues.
Most spay and neuter programs are not available for rabbits, and there is not as much awareness to the fact that every year rabbits are bought for Easter presents. Then each fall shelters and rescues become overwhelmed because the Easter presents grow up, and have increasing care needs.
Gretta Parker in the summer of 2011, started Baskets for Bunnies, Inc a non- profit to help rabbit rescues get much needed supplies. She designed a line of clothing on Cafepress using Flopsy to bring in revenue because of his popularity on Facebook (www.cafepress.com/flopsyparker). She used the money to send supplies, money and toys to Zooh Corner and the Bunny Castle Rescues in California. Ffive Rescue and the Ohio House Rabbit Society in Ohio. Gainesville Rabbit Rescue, in Gainesville FL. Little Furries Rescue in Brown Mills, NJ, and Funnybunny Sanctuary in Athens WV. These are all small organizations or rescues that have had a lot of hardship. They receive everything from fleeces to water bottles once a month.
This December they have started a campaign called Toys for Hops, the idea being bringing in donations for toys for rescue rabbits and supplies, things rabbit rescues always need but cannot always afford. Rabbits need to be able to have to toys to chew for their teeth health. Rescues are often burdened with high spay and neuter costs for rabbits, and they are not as main stream as a lot of rescues. Gretta Parker's mission is to give every rescue the things that they need, so they can focus on rescuing more rabbits. A rabbit toy company Pet Rabbit Toys (www.pet-rabbit-toys.com) decided to share in her mission and has offered to match donations ordered through them through a special link on the Baskets website (www.basketsforbunnies.org). In 24 hours the fans of Flopsy and of their mission have already raised 400 rabbit toys that will go to rescues all over the US.
.The long term goal of Baskets for Bunnies, Inc. is to change the way rabbits are thought of as pets. Gretta Parker wants to start an national rabbit spay and neuter fund, financial support for owners who lose their jobs so they do not have to surrender their pets, and inspire more non- profits to support each other. There is still a lot of work to be done, to help or donate please visit www.basketsforbunnies.org
