Jakim N. Donaldson Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who
Jakim Donaldson, power forward for the New Jersey Nets, works to combat community violence
PITTSBURGH, PA, July 18, 2011 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- Jakim N. Donaldson, Professional Basketball Player for the New Jersey Nets and Co-Founder of P.R.O.M.I.S.E., has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in athletics and nonprofit services.
Mr. Donaldson is a professional basketball player who specializes in rebounding. A star athlete throughout high school and college, he earned the distinction of being the all-time leading rebounder in Edinboro University's history. In 2005, he was named Player of the Year at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and was a member of the All-American Basketball League's Division II first team. He went on to play basketball in Portugal for one year and Spain for five years, where he was named Most Valuable Player twice. In the summer of 2010, Mr. Donaldson joined the NBA as a member of the New Jersey Nets; he plays in the position of power forward.
However, following the untimely death of his younger brother, Jehru, in 2007, Mr. Donaldson was forced to do rebounding of a different sort. Jehru was only 18 years old when he fell victim to community violence. In response to this tragedy, Mr. Donaldson and his father, Jay, co-founded a nonprofit organization called P.R.O.M.I.S.E. Quite simply, the organization's acronym represents its mission, "Protecting and Restoring the Order of Mankind with the Initiative to Serving Elders." Mr. Donaldson works to raise violence awareness within his community through rallies, events and fundraisers. He also creates mentorship and service opportunities between youth and elders in order to overcome generational gaps and provide learning experiences for young people. His organization also supports students with a scholarship fund and a career day at Pittsburgh's Oliver High School.
In the years to come, Mr. Donaldson plans to continue growing his foundation; he also hopes to win a championship in the NBA. He eventually intends to venture into real estate consulting.
