California Resident and Brain Tumor Survivor Karen Armstrong Named Event Ambassador for the Moving Towards a Cure 5K Run/Walk Los Angeles 2012

California resident and brain tumor survivor Karen Armstrong, named Event Ambassador for 2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Run/Walk, March 10th at 9 am at Woodley Ave Park, Van Nuys, CA.

CLEARWATER, FL, February 22, 2012 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- California resident and brain tumor survivor Karen Armstrong, has been named Event Ambassador for the 2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 9 am (registration starts at 8am) at Woodley Ave Park in Van Nuys, CA. This event is hosted by Miles For Hope, a nonprofit brain tumor foundation. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be directed to a pediatric brain tumor vaccine clinical trial at UCLA.

Karen was first diagnosed in June 2009. After blacking out, she ended up in the emergency room where an MRI revealed she had a brain tumor. She was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme. She underwent surgery four days later at Balboa Naval Hospital, where surgeons completed a complete right temporal lobe resection and were able to remove the entire tumor. Karen's additional treatment included seven (7) weeks of radiation, along with the chemotherapy drug Temador, which she will remain on indefinitely. In addition to a successful surgery, Karen credits her recovery on her strong faith and her support system of family, friends, and military family. Her family was stationed in Japan when she was diagnosed and she was flown back to the U.S. immediately for surgery. Her military family offered tremendous support and assistance, helping move her family back to the U.S. to accompany her during her surgery and recovery.

Throughout her recovery, Karen began sharing her story with people who were either not aware of brain cancer or who were going through it themselves. She found Miles For Hope on Facebook, through its founder Bob Gibbs, a fellow brain tumor patient, who lost his own battle to brain cancer in December 2011. Karen's goal is to help support fundraising for desperately needed brain cancer research and to help find a cure in her lifetime. Karen has formed Team Staystrong, consisting of herself, her husband, family, and friends, to participate in the upcoming Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 in Van Nuys, CA.

Miles for Hope chose Karen as the Event Ambassador to honor her strength and her efforts in the fight against this disease. Karen's story is one of survival and recovery, giving hope to other brain tumor survivors. Brain Tumors affect over 200,000 people each year; one person every three minutes in the United States. They are the leading cause of solid tumor cancer deaths in children and young adults under the age of 20, the second leading cause of cancer death in males under the age of 29, and fifth cause of cancer death in female adults age 20-39.

After the recent passing of Miles For Hope co-Founder Robert (Bob) Gibbs, who fought a seven-year battle with brain cancer, his wife Barb stated: "Countless people in the U.S. have lost their battle against this disease, and hundreds of thousands more are still fighting. Now more than ever, we are dedicated to raising awareness and funding through our Moving Towards a Cure events, for desperately needed brain tumor research so that other people and their families do not have to continue to suffer from this devastating disease."

The 2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 9 am at Woodley Ave Park, located at 6335 Woodley Ave, Van Nuys, CA 91406.
