Moving Towards a Cure 5K Run/Walk to Raise Funds for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research at UCLA
2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 9 am at Woodley Ave Park in Van Nuys, CA to help fund pediatric brain tumor vaccine clinical trial at UCLA.
CLEARWATER, FL, February 19, 2012 /Nonprofit PR News/ -- Miles For Hope is hosting its 2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 9 am (registration starts at 8am) at Woodley Ave Park in Van Nuys, CA. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be directed to a pediatric brain tumor vaccine clinical trial at UCLA.
In 2011, the clinical trial Optimizing Dendritic Cell Vaccination for Low Grade Glioma Patients, was proudly funded by Miles For Hope, Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure and The Stephen M. Coffman Charitable Trust. These non-profit organizations came together to jointly fund a $100,000 research grant to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) neurosurgeon Linda Liau, M.D., PhD to begin this clinical trial, which is the first trial of its kind for patients that have been diagnosed with low grade gliomas, a common form of brain cancer. The trial officially opened in December 2011 and is now accepting patients. This research has the potential to improve the lives of brain cancer patients. The next grant to be funded will expand this trial to include pediatric brain tumor patients.
This clinical trial was the vision of Miles For Hope and the reason the organization was initially started. The late Robert Gibbs, co-founder of Miles For Hope, lost his seven-year battle with brain cancer in December 2011. Robert Gibbs was diagnosed in 2004 with brain cancer at the age of 34. After researching possible treatment options, he found an experimental brain cancer vaccine. However, Gibbs did not qualify for the vaccine at UCLA until 2008 after his second brain surgery when it was discovered the brain cancer reached a Stage III.
Gibbs wife and co-founder, Barb Gibbs, stated "Our goal with this trial is to provide patients with the hope that Bob never had during his battle. The hope is that brain tumors can be treated effectively as a Grade II with a Dendritic Cell Vaccine increasing survival rates. Bob would have been thrilled to see this vision become a reality so that now, other patients have access to better treatment alternatives at an earlier stage. Countless people in the U.S. have lost their battle against this disease, and hundreds of thousands more are still fighting. Now more than ever, we are dedicated to raising awareness and funding through our Moving Towards a Cure events, for desperately needed brain tumor research so that other people and their families do not have to continue to suffer from this devastating disease."
Brain tumors affect over 200,000 people each year; one person every three minutes in the United States. They are also the leading cause of solid tumor cancer deaths in children and young adults under the age of 20. It is estimated that over 600,000 people are battling a brain tumor in the United States. In addition, brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer death in males under the age of 29 and ranked fifth as the cause of cancer death in female adults age 20-39.
The 2nd Annual Moving Towards a Cure 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 9 am at Woodley Ave Park, located at 6335 Woodley Ave, Van Nuys, CA 91406.
