Worldwide Who's Who Names Kim Kelly Professional of the Year in Nonprofit Operations Management
Kim Kelly ensures that children in Australia are given equal access to literacy skills
SYDNEY, NSW, AUSTRALIA, February 14, 2012 /Nonprofit PR News/ --Kim Kelly, a Founder and Executive Director of The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF), has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Nonprofit Operations Management. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.
"I would like to see all Australian children given the same opportunities to grow and thrive, as I truly believe that being able to read, write and count is a basic human right," states Kim Kelly. Her total commitment to this cause developed after a current affairs program aired a story about the successful work of her business partner, leading Australian speech pathologist Mary-Ruth Mendel, and their office was inundated with more than 3,000 phone calls from distraught parents and community members wanting to help children and adults who were struggling to read at even the most basic level. In response, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Mendel went to work establishing a charity that would properly and equitably assist people in need of literacy support. They succeeded in founding the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation in 1999.
Ms. Kelly's work entails ensuring that children are given equal access to the literacy skills that many Australians take for granted. She is a tireless advocate for the power of literacy to transform lives. As executive director of ALNF, she oversees the organization's efforts to raise funds to develop, implement and sustain innovative literacy programs for individuals, families and communities. She employs her expertise in business management to develop and implement high-level strategies and manage the overal operations and resources of the ALNF. Ms. Kelly attributes her success to her passion for the organization's mission, as well as her ability to run a transparent organization and deliver excellent sustainable programs.
ALNF's efforts have not gone without formal recognition. At the Ethical Investor's Sixth Australian Sustainability Awards in 2006, ALNF received the Best Community Project Award for the design and delivery of its First Language Reading Course to Indigenous community members. In 2007, ALNF was awarded the University of Western Sydney Partnership Award for its Refugee Action Support program. In 2010, the program was identified by the The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, now known as the Australian Human Rights Commission, and the Refugee Council of Australia as a model of excellence. The same year, ALNF and The Sydney Morning Herald were awarded the UN Media Peace Award for their collaboration on ALNF's Indigenous literacy appeal. In 2011, the Refugee Action Support program was a finalist for the prestigious MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship from the University of Western Sydney. In 2012 Kim and Mary-Ruth were honored with the recommendation for Sydney's Top 100 Most Influential People.
Ms. Kelly intends to continue providing good service toward achieving ALNF's mission in the years to come. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family; she is a devoted mother of four children.
